SCULPTURES

The mansion, that belonged to one of the oldest and most noble families of Zakynthos contains, as expected, a variety of artifacts of great historical and aesthetic value.

The island constituted part of the venetian “state of the sea” (Stato del Mar) from the 15th and up until the end of the 18th century. Therefore its cultural and social relations to Venice augmented with the passing of time.
Apart from the aforementioned artifacts, in the mansion there are to be found many other objects of art that testify the continuation of the Roma’s family activities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and up to our days
During the Greek War of Independence (1821-1830), members of the family were always involved in the political and military operations of the day winning many distinctions for their services to the Nation.
The cultural atmosphere of Zakynthos, and generally the Ionian Islands, has been always enriched by influences originating to Western Europe. The final result can be defined by the same words that are being used to characterize the poetry of the national greek poet, Dionisios Solomos: mixed, and therefore genuine.

The meaning of individuality against the masses, the books and manuscripts prove the knowledge and power of a certain class over the uneducated and powerless. Inside the Roma Mansion, the meaning of the continuation of the neo- Hellenic history is ever present.

This is a French made synthesis(a) for office use made from bronze and covered with gold leaf, created at the end of 18th  beginning 19th century ,it was probably used as an ink pot and pencil stand. The synthesis represents the oath of Horatii, a popular subject in France, but later also in the rest of Europe since 1785 (when it became the subject of a painting of David, Napoleon’s personal painter, made for the salon of Paris and presently at Louvre).

Art Image Description

In ancient Rome the Horati clan was at a constant conflict with the clan of Houratius, from the city of Alba. The painting of David, as well as the present sculpture, depicts the moment when the sons of Horatii, armed and with raised hands, are vowing to their father that they shall defeat their enemies.
Three sons of each family participated to a duel, from which only one Horatio survived (at the front side of the sculpture all lie dead with the exception of the victor)

The David painting is enriched, at the right lower side, with the mothers and sisters of Horatii  crying, especially with the daughter Cornilia who was engaged to one of the Kouratii. The Horatio who survived found, upon his return,   his sister Cornilia wailing for the loss of her fiancé  and kill her too,  Such practices, in the post revolutionary period , 1789, were common.
